Yes, you are able to begin your journey no matter how long it has been since you worked out. The best time to start may be decades ago, but the second best time to start is now. It is never too late to start and no one is too old or too unfit to begin.
Strength training offers numerous benefits for longevity, making it a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle as we age. Research has shown that engaging in resistance exercises can significantly reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, with studies indicating a 10-17% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Even just 30-60 minutes of strength training per week can yield maximum risk reduction benefits. Beyond extending lifespan, strength training enhances health-span by improving muscle strength, bone density, metabolism, and cognitive function. It also helps maintain flexibility, balance, and independence in older adults. Remarkably, combining strength training with aerobic exercise provides the greatest longevity gains, with one study reporting a 41-47% lower risk of dying during the follow-up period compared to sedentary individuals. Strength and conditioning training is customised to suit the individual, however Ed is an advocate for highly targeted precision mobility and conditioning using tempo to create muscle under tension. Tempo training, also known as time under tension (TUT) training, is a cutting-edge method in strength training that focuses on controlling the speed of movement during exercises. This technique involves manipulating the duration of each phase of a repetition, typically represented by a four-digit code such as 31X1, where each number corresponds to the eccentric, isometric, concentric, and rest phases respectively. By emphasising slower, controlled movements with lighter weights, tempo training enhances muscle control, increases metabolic stress, and promotes greater strength gains through improved motor unit recruitment. This approach not only stimulates muscle growth but also improves form, reduces injury risk, and enhances overall body awareness
If sizing up is your goal then talk to Ed and a specific program will be designed for you to get you where you need to go. Tempo and targeted training will certainly get you size, but you’ll also need to think about what you’re eating and how to get size without injury through longer sets with smaller weights. Ed has achieved his own significant bulking after finding himself on his near-death bed and can share all his body hacks to help you get there too.
